Pre-recognition of façade-typologies

DESCRIPTION:

Use of digital technologies, such as satellite images, street-level photos and 3D scans, to automatically analyse buildings and identify those with similar characteristics. By looking at features such as roof shapes, façade designs and construction materials, the system creates a kind of “building DNA” that groups buildings into common types. This makes it easier to plan large-scale renovations, identify suitable retrofit solutions and accelerate the delivery of energy-efficient upgrades across entire neighbourhoods.

VALUE

Large-scale building renovation programmes require extensive knowledge of the existing building stock. However, collecting detailed information building-by-building is time-consuming, costly, and often difficult at district or city scale. The solution addresses this challenge by enabling automated and scalable identification of building typologies using existing visual and spatial datasets. By clustering buildings with similar façade and roof characteristics, the approach supports the development of industrialised retrofit strategies and standardised renovation solutions.

APPLICATION

Municipalities can use the software to support district-scale renovation planning and building stock analysis. Architects and constructors can benefit from faster identification of suitable retrofit typologies and façade solutions. Real-estate representatives may use the system to assess renovation potential across housing portfolios. The research community and educational institutions can apply the methodology within further studies.
