Meet The Partners

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is the largest university in Norway, with more than 40 000 students. The main scientific profile is within technology and the natural sciences with a focus on cross-disciplinary competency to meet global challenges, summarized by the vision: Knowledge for a better world. Three out of four Strategic Research Areas at NTNU – Sustainability, Energy and Health – contribute directly to sustainable urbanization, delivering creative innovations with far-reaching social and economic impact in close collaboration with cities, industry, authorities, and civil society.

The Architects’ Council of Europe is the European organisation representing the architectural profession at European level. Its headquarters and Secretariat are located in Brussels. Its membership currently consists of 43 Member Organisations, which are the regulatory and professional representative bodies in all European Union (EU) Member States, and accession Countries, Switzerland and Norway. Through them, the ACE represents the interests of over 600,000 architects from 30 countries in Europe. The ACE is the communication and dissemination leader of the ARV project.

Palma City Council, also popularly known as Cort, is one of the four public administrations with political responsibility in the city of Palma, capital of the Balearic Islands in Spain. The area of City Model, Appropriate Housing and Sustainability promotes the transformation of the socio-economic and environmental model through urban intervention with criteria of sustainability and social justice, and with the consensus of social agents, to make Palma a city for the people.

Llevant Innovation District, currently under development, is conceived as a space of opportunity for the transformation of the city's economic model with the objectives of environmental sustainability and social justice. The transition of the energy model to deal with the climate crisis is one of the goals of the district.

Within the ARV project, Palma assumes responsibility for carrying out the following innovations:

- Large-scale energy renovation of dwellings in La Soledat neighborhood.

- Creation and dynamization of the Citilab as a space for collaborative co-creation to collectively achieve the goals of energy transition and social justice, among others.

- Promotion and creation of citizen energy communities

- Adaptation of planning tools to improve the energy efficiency of homes

Bos Installatiewerken B.V. is a family-owned business that has been founded in 1939. With 83 years of experience in the HVAC industry, we have seen all sorts of energy transitions and we are proud to play a role in the energy transition we are facing right now. Bos stands for craftsmanship, trustworthiness, innovation and knowledge. The Inside Out 1.0 project is one the results of these characteristics and we hope to bring our sustainable renovation products to a higher level. Our mission in ARV is, among others, to scale up the results achieved within the Inside Out project and make the energy transition possible.

Buro De Haan is fully committed to various areas to meet massive challenges in the construction sector: unaffordable housing, carbon emissions and shortage in qualified personnel. These are the challenges in which we find our mission: Build Better. Our strategy to achieve this mission is based on 7 business units. From spatial planning to visual and technical design to IT-automation. Due to cross-pollination and all under one roof the total efficiency will be greater than the sum of its parts, when Buro De Haan is deployed. A team of driven people, all specialists in their own discipline, is our organization key to success.

Center Denmark is a non-profit and independent company that provides digital infrastructure that supports players in the energy sector to develop new data-driven solutions that take advantage of opportunities in sector coupling and accelerate the green transition. The company has established the incubator (an innovative office community) Digital Energy Hub to stimulate companies and organizations in the ecosystem across energy supply types to develop new data-driven business models and products. The Digital Energy Hub ensures that the results of new research are made available and brought into play in the energy industry through the digital infrastructure.

Founded in 1707, the Czech Technical University – CVUT is one of the oldest and largest technical universities in Europe – approx. 18,000 students at eight engineering faculties. The University Centre for Energy Efficient Buildings (UCEEB) was founded in 2012 as an independent research institute within CVUT. UCEEB brings together researchers from 4 founding faculties (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering). UCEEB is a national centre of excellence in field of energy efficient building and focuses on implementing sustainable innovations for whole building life cycle. The main strength of the Centre is strong transfer of knowledge to practice through close cooperation with industry and municipalities. UCEEB has five research departments that include reducing energy demand in buildings, resource efficiency, advanced control systems, indoor environmental quality and sustainability in the built environment.

Danfoss Engineers Technologies enable the world of tomorrow to do more with less. We meet the growing need for infrastructure, food supply, energy efficiency and climate-friendly solutions. We are active in the field of renewable energy as well as district heating infrastructure for cities and urban communities. ENFOR provides market-leading energy forecasting and optimization solutions for the energy sector. Utilities, energy traders, transmission and distribution system operators use ENFOR solutions for forecasting of renewable energy production, electricity and heat demand as well as optimization of district heating systems. ENFOR was established in 2006 as a spin-off from the Technical University of Denmark. The company has a solid operational track record and has successfully served customers all over the world for many years.

Eurac Research is a private research center founded in 1992 in Bozen (South Tyrol). Our research addresses the greatest challenges of the future: keeping societies healthy, fostering intact environments, promoting sustainable energy and developing well-functioning political and social systems. The Institute for Renewable Energy conducts applied research on advanced energy systems, based on or including sustainable energy sources. We focus on 6 research fields: Sustainable Heating & Cooling Systems, Photovoltaic Energy Systems, Energy Efficient Buildings, Energy Retrofit of Historic Buildings, Urban & Regional Energy Systems, Overall Energy System Modelling & E-Mobility.

The Green Digital Finance Alliance was launched by Ant Financial Services and UN Environment Programme (UNEP) to address the potential for digital finance and fintech-powered business innovations to reshape the financial system in ways that better align it with the needs of sustainable development. In the ARV project, a significant part of our work is to map, analyse and rethink to innovate how finance, data, and new technologies are exploited in a bid to optimise how regulatory frameworks can be harnessed to support innovation in financing solutions and business models to accelerate the transition to a less carbon-intensive economy.

HABITECH - Energy and Environment District - is the Italian leading centre for green building, renewable energy and innovation. As a non-profit cluster organization established in 2006 in Rovereto (Autonomous Province of Trento), it aims at creating business networks and production chains specialised in the fields of sustainable buildings, energy efficiency and smart technologies. Today Habitech consists of around 130 members, including SMEs, large companies, research centres and public entities, located in the Autonomous Province of Trento and elsewhere in Italy.
Habitech is at the forefront of several regional, national, and EU projects and initiatives which enhance the different dimensions of sustainability in the construction sector.

Housing Europe is the European Federation of Public, Cooperative and Social Housing. Established in 1988, it is a network of 46 national and regional federations which together gather about 43,000 public, social and cooperative housing providers in 25 countries. Altogether they manage around 25 million homes. Social, public and co-operative housing providers have a vision of a Europe which provides access to decent and affordable housing for all in communities which are socially, economically and environmentally sustainable and where everyone is enabled to reach their full potential.

The Balearic Social Housing Institute (IBAVI) is a public body attached to the Mobility and Housing Ministry of the Government of the Balearic Islands, whose objective is the creation and maintenance of a real estate park of public social housing for the citizens of this community since 1986. The current housing park consists of more than 1.800 protected homes on a rental basis. At this moment, there are more than 900 new dwellings under construction to face housing emergency and climate emergency. Previously, the IBAVI promoted and developed the LIFE Reusing Posidonia Project, funded by the European programme LIFE+ for Nature Conservation & Climate Change Adaptation Projects. It has been awarded with the 2021 LIFE Award for Best Environment Project by the European Commission, among many others.

The Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC) is a publicly funded institution created in 2009 based in Barcelona that conducts innovative research over a wide range of disciplines within the science and technology energy field. IREC contributes to sustainable development via development of new technological solutions, promotion of scientific and technological know-how related to clean energy and its efficient use as well transfer of solution and expertise to market actors. The institute also supports the promotion of renewable energy technologies and assists political decision-makers. IREC has participated in more than 60 projects, with a portfolio of more than 7M€. Additionally, IREC published more than 500 peer-reviewed papers, holds more than 30 patents and has supported the creation of 3 spin-off companies.

MEX Architects is an architecture firm with emphasis on architecture and its technical elaboration. In addition to healthcare projects, MEX architects is specialized in renovating residential buildings from the 1970s. Clients include care institutions, housing corporations, project developers and private individuals. Mex Architects is a flexible party. A team player who is able to coordinate large processes without losing sight of the details with a great sense of responsibility for the entire process from design to delivery and aftercare. The firm translates client requirements into a suitable design that occupies the right position in its surroundings. At Mex Architects, budget, planning and feasibility are at least as important as design. By using the BIM (Building Information Model) method, Mex Architects is also able to manage complex processes. In the ARV project MEX will provide innovative design services for integrating building components, active facades, BIPV into attractive and low resource designs

Currently, with 8 years of experience and more than 350 applications in electric and hybrid transportation (trolleybus, e-bus, tram, AGV), and energy storage systems ESS, we are one of the leading companies in battery systems integration in Europe. Our main customers are e.g. Skoda Electric/ Transportation, EKOVA Electric, OMEXOM AND European Organization for Nuclear Research CERN. Our engineers have more than 15 years of experience in the battery business.

Oslobygg KF is a municipal enterprise, which is sorted under the City Council Department for Industry and Ownership. Oslobygg KF is one of the country’s largest property managers with almost 3 millions square meters in portfolio which consists of schools, kindergartens, sport halls, public library, cultural buildings, hospitals, fire stations, social housing, residential care homes and other municipal disabilities. The organisation has around 600 employees, consisting mainly of construction engineers and developers, property managers, operators and advisors. Their aim is to be at the forefront of sustainable and innovative solutions and technical. In ARV, OBY will be the developer and leader of the Norwegian Demo project.

Politecnico di Torino is one of the most important research and academic institutions in Italy. The Department of Structural, Geotechnical and Building Engineering (DISEG) promotes and coordinates basic and applied research, training, technology transfer and services in the fields of structural mechanics, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, building technology, building production, drawing and representation. The Department of Architecture and Design (DAD) verges these objectives with regards to architectural and urban design including its sustainability, economics and financial aspects, as well as restoration, enhancement and management of architectural, urban and landscape heritage, and industrial, graphic and virtual design.

Sonderborg´s ProjectZero project is focused on creating a ZEROcarbon Sonderborg-territory by 2029 by a full-scale demonstration of an integrated energy system in Sonderborg. Since its creation in 2020, a 51.7% CO2-reduction have been achieved - and the new Masterplan2029, approved by the Sonderborg City Council by the end of 2021, co-created by almost 100 local experts and stakeholders has defined the most cost-efficient way to achieve Sonderborg´s ZEROcarbon (neutrality) ambition by 2029. ProjectZero is based on a public-private partnership between the municipality, the Danfoss-foundation, local /regional utility companies, the SDU Southern Denmark University supported (when created) by the Nordea national bank foundation and the DONG Energy national energy company. ProjectZero is anchored in a legal structure facilitating the ProjectZero company and operating the ProjectZero secretariat in Sonderborg.

Rc Panels produces high-quality finished custom facade elements. Our mission is to make a substantial contribution to eliminating CO2 emissions from built environment. Thanks to its patented production methodology, Rc Panels is able to deliver higher quality products at substantially lower prices. The prefabricated elements, which are produced in a semi-continuous line process, include facade finishes, frames, mounting rails and installation components, the core of these facade panels exists of (in house produced) sandwich elements. Due to the unique bonding process, using vacuum techniques, a sandwich panel with high construction strength and insulation value is created. Rc Panels’ products are in high demand for both new construction and renovation projects.

SINTEF has developed solutions and innovation for society and customers all over the world for more than 60 years. Our vision is Technology for a better society: we deliver innovation by developing knowledge and technologies that are brought into practical use. SINTEF is multidisciplinary with international top-level expertise in the fields of technology, natural science, medicine, and social science. We conduct contracting R&D as a partner for private and public sectors.
SINTEF Community works across the themes of integrative energy efficient buildings, life‐cycle analysis, urban modelling, living labs, spatial planning, mobility, and economics.

AIGUASOL is a Spanish SME that provides engineering, consultancy and research services, promoting innovative solutions to reduce the impact associated to the use of energym working mainly with comfortable indoor and outdoor spaces, as well as efficient energy systems. Operating as a working cooperative, with a horizontal work structure participatory management, AIGUASOL pursues organisational transformation and focuses on social responsibility, innovation, training and quality. It combines scientific knowledge, practical experience and management skills, which are essential to successfully reach the objectives of the project. In ARV, its primary focus will be using and testing tools for the implementation of CPCCs and integrating circular design in the Spanish demo project.

Sønderborg Andelsboligforening - SAB is a non-profit independent and private social housing company established as a cooperative member organization of the tenants. The tenants own SAB and are organized in housing departments with individual economies. The tenants make their own decisions concerning their particular housing department. SAB has one main board, furthermore, each department has a board. SAB works with activities related to housing of its tenants. SAB has 46 departments with 3,400 apartments in the municipality of Sonderborg, Denmark. Department 22 in SAB is the Danish demo-project in ARV. Department 22 is constructed in 1973 and has 432 apartments divided into 19 housing blocks.

Statutory city of Karviná is a city in Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic, on the Olza River. Karviná lies in the historical region of Cieszyn Silesia. Together with neighboring towns it forms industrial Ostrava-Karviná Coal Basin. It has 51 373 inhabitants (2021 census). Even if at first sight it might not seem so, this industrial town is also rich with cultural and social history. The city has gone through a complicated and multidimensional development for more than seven centuries. In spite of the fact that our town belongs to the areas with a dense concentration of industry, commercial and touristic part were strengthened in the last years.

Stichting Bo-Ex ’91 is a housing corporation under Dutch Law, the Housing Act, established in 1907. Their main task is to provide low-income households with sound quality and affordable housing. Bo-Ex cannot be selective in admitting households to its dwellings, except for income (there is a maximum). Bo-Ex own approximately 9,000 dwellings in the city of Utrecht, of which the most are for independent households.

Through its practice-based research, University of Applied Sciences Utrecht (HU) contributes to solutions for a wide range of societal issues. Issues submitted by our partners working in the field – at the regional, national and international level. UAS Utrecht has around 36,000 degree seeking students enrolled and offers over 70 different degree courses (bachelor and master level, full-time and part-time, summer school and professional courses). Education and research are closely related at HU.

Mitros is a Dutch housing corporation. We provide housing for low-income households in the Utrecht region. Mitros owns 30.000 dwellings, have done so for the last 100 years and will continue to do so. We aim to grow in order to keep up with the growth of te city. We build new projects and renovate older ones. We also sell some of our real-estate and even demolish some in order to build more and better new houses.

UniTrento is a dynamic, middle-size University (about 16,000 students) located in the North East of Italy. The primary objective of DICAM (Department of Civil Environmental and Mechanical Engineering) is the development of research and teaching in important fields of engineering and architecture. The research and teaching activities are developed in six main subject areas, aimed at enhancing the individual and society well-being where they are developed and applied. Within this framework they focus on the quality of the urban and natural environments, the enhancement of the quality of life, security and the harmonious development of society, through the innovation of products.

Utrecht University (UU), founded in 1636, is an internationally renowned research university. The quality of research at the University is demonstrated by positive research evaluations and a high position in international league tables. The 2020 Shanghai Rankings of world-class universities put Utrecht University in first place in the Netherlands and 52nd worldwide. The Faculty of Geosciences has leading international positions in academic research into sustainability, solar energy and urbanisation. The extensive and internationally oriented research of the faculty makes a major contribution to the Shanghai ranking. The department Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development in the faculty aims to contribute to improved knowledge related to all Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as set by the United Nations in 2015. The research group Energy & Resources (E&R) of the Copernicus Institute will be involved in the ARV project.

We focus on 6 research fields: Sustainable Heating & Cooling Systems, Photovoltaic Energy Systems, Energy Efficient Buildings, Energy Retrofit of Historic Buildings, Urban & Regional Energy Systems, Overall Energy System Modelling & E-Mobility.

The Green Digital Finance Alliance was launched by Ant Financial Services and UN Environment Programme (UNEP) to address the potential for digital finance and fintech-powered business innovations to reshape the financial system in ways that better align it with the needs of sustainable development. In the ARV project, a significant part of our work is to map, analyse and rethink to innovate how finance, data, and new technologies are exploited in a bid to optimise how regulatory frameworks can be harnessed to support innovation in financing solutions and business models to accelerate the transition to a less carbon-intensive economy.

HABITECH - Energy and Environment District - is the Italian leading centre for green building, renewable energy and innovation. As a non-profit cluster organization established in 2006 in Rovereto (Autonomous Province of Trento), it aims at creating business networks and production chains specialised in the fields of sustainable buildings, energy efficiency and smart technologies. Today Habitech consists of around 130 members, including SMEs, large companies, research centres and public entities, located in the Autonomous Province of Trento and elsewhere in Italy.
Habitech is at the forefront of several regional, national, and EU projects and initiatives which enhance the different dimensions of sustainability in the construction sector.

Housing Europe is the European Federation of Public, Cooperative and Social Housing. Established in 1988, it is a network of 46 national and regional federations which together gather about 43,000 public, social and cooperative housing providers in 25 countries. Altogether they manage around 25 million homes. Social, public and co-operative housing providers have a vision of a Europe which provides access to decent and affordable housing for all in communities which are socially, economically and environmentally sustainable and where everyone is enabled to reach their full potential.

The Balearic Social Housing Institute (IBAVI) is a public body attached to the Mobility and Housing Ministry of the Government of the Balearic Islands, whose objective is the creation and maintenance of a real estate park of public social housing for the citizens of this community since 1986. The current housing park consists of more than 1.800 protected homes on a rental basis. At this moment, there are more than 900 new dwellings under construction to face housing emergency and climate emergency. Previously, the IBAVI promoted and developed the LIFE Reusing Posidonia Project, funded by the European programme LIFE+ for Nature Conservation & Climate Change Adaptation Projects. It has been awarded with the 2021 LIFE Award for Best Environment Project by the European Commission, among many others.

The Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC) is a publicly funded institution created in 2009 based in Barcelona that conducts innovative research over a wide range of disciplines within the science and technology energy field. IREC contributes to sustainable development via development of new technological solutions, promotion of scientific and technological know-how related to clean energy and its efficient use as well transfer of solution and expertise to market actors. The institute also supports the promotion of renewable energy technologies and assists political decision-makers. IREC has participated in more than 60 projects, with a portfolio of more than 7M€. Additionally, IREC published more than 500 peer-reviewed papers, holds more than 30 patents and has supported the creation of 3 spin-off companies.

In addition to healthcare projects, MEX architects is specialized in renovating residential buildings from the 1970s. Our main customers are e.g. Skoda Electric/ Transportation, EKOVA Electric, OMEXOM AND European Organization for Nuclear Research CERN. Our engineers have more than 15 years of experience in the battery business.

Oslobygg KF is a municipal enterprise, which is sorted under the City Council Department for Industry and Ownership. Oslobygg KF is one of the country’s largest property managers with almost 3 millions square meters in portfolio which consists of schools, kindergartens, sport halls, public library, cultural buildings, hospitals, fire stations, social housing, residential care homes and other municipal disabilities. The organisation has around 600 employees, consisting mainly of construction engineers and developers, property managers, operators and advisors. Their aim is to be at the forefront of sustainable and innovative solutions and technical. In ARV, OBY will be the developer and leader of the Norwegian Demo project.

Politecnico di Torino is one of the most important research and academic institutions in Italy. The Department of Structural, Geotechnical and Building Engineering (DISEG) promotes and coordinates basic and applied research, training, technology transfer and services in the fields of structural mechanics, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, building technology, building production, drawing and representation. The Department of Architecture and Design (DAD) verges these objectives with regards to architectural and urban design including its sustainability, economics and financial aspects, as well as restoration, enhancement and management of architectural, urban and landscape heritage, and industrial, graphic and virtual design.

Sonderborg´s ProjectZero project is focused on creating a ZEROcarbon Sonderborg-territory by 2029 by a full-scale demonstration of an integrated energy system in Sonderborg. Since its creation in 2020, a 51.7% CO2-reduction have been achieved - and the new Masterplan2029, approved by the Sonderborg City Council by the end of 2021, co-created by almost 100 local experts and stakeholders has defined the most cost-efficient way to achieve Sonderborg´s ZEROcarbon (neutrality) ambition by 2029. ProjectZero is based on a public-private partnership between the municipality, the Danfoss-foundation, local /regional utility companies, the SDU Southern Denmark University supported (when created) by the Nordea national bank foundation and the DONG Energy national energy company. ProjectZero is anchored in a legal structure facilitating the ProjectZero company and operating the ProjectZero secretariat in Sonderborg.

Rc Panels produces high-quality finished custom facade elements. Our mission is to make a substantial contribution to eliminating CO2 emissions from built environment. Thanks to its patented production methodology, Rc Panels is able to deliver higher quality products at substantially lower prices. The prefabricated elements, which are produced in a semi-continuous line process, include facade finishes, frames, mounting rails and installation components, the core of these facade panels exists of (in house produced) sandwich elements. Due to the unique bonding process, using vacuum techniques, a sandwich panel with high construction strength and insulation value is created. Rc Panels’ products are in high demand for both new construction and renovation projects.

AIGUASOL is a Spanish SME that provides engineering, consultancy and research services, promoting innovative solutions to reduce the impact associated to the use of energym working mainly with comfortable indoor and outdoor spaces, as well as efficient energy systems. Operating as a working cooperative, with a horizontal work structure participatory management, AIGUASOL pursues organisational transformation and focuses on social responsibility, innovation, training and quality. It combines scientific knowledge, practical experience and management skills, which are essential to successfully reach the objectives of the project. In ARV, its primary focus will be using and testing tools for the implementation of CPCCs and integrating circular design in the Spanish demo project.

Sønderborg Andelsboligforening - SAB is a non-profit independent and private social housing company established as a cooperative member organization of the tenants. The tenants own SAB and are organized in housing departments with individual economies. The tenants make their own decisions concerning their particular housing department. SAB has one main board, furthermore, each department has a board. SAB works with activities related to housing of its tenants. SAB has 46 departments with 3,400 apartments in the municipality of Sonderborg, Denmark. Department 22 in SAB is the Danish demo-project in ARV. Department 22 is constructed in 1973 and has 432 apartments divided into 19 housing blocks.

Statutory city of Karviná is a city in Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic, on the Olza River. Karviná lies in the historical region of Cieszyn Silesia. Together with neighboring towns it forms industrial Ostrava-Karviná Coal Basin. It has 51 373 inhabitants (2021 census). Even if at first sight it might not seem so, this industrial town is also rich with cultural and social history. The city has gone through a complicated and multidimensional development for more than seven centuries. In spite of the fact that our town belongs to the areas with a dense concentration of industry, commercial and touristic part were strengthened in the last years.

Stichting Bo-Ex ’91 is a housing corporation under Dutch Law, the Housing Act, established in 1907. Their main task is to provide low-income households with sound quality and affordable housing. Bo-Ex cannot be selective in admitting households to its dwellings, except for income (there is a maximum). Bo-Ex own approximately 9,000 dwellings in the city of Utrecht, of which the most are for independent households.

Mitros is a Dutch housing corporation. We provide housing for low-income households in the Utrecht region. Mitros owns 30.000 dwellings, have done so for the last 100 years and will continue to do so. We aim to grow in order to keep up with the growth of te city. We build new projects and renovate older ones. We also sell some of our real-estate and even demolish some in order to build more and better new houses.

UniTrento is a dynamic, middle-size University (about 16,000 students) located in the North East of Italy. The primary objective of DICAM (Department of Civil Environmental and Mechanical Engineering) is the development of research and teaching in important fields of engineering and architecture. The research and teaching activities are developed in six main subject areas, aimed at enhancing the individual and society well-being where they are developed and applied. Within this framework they focus on the quality of the urban and natural environments, the enhancement of the quality of life, security and the harmonious development of society, through the innovation of products.

Utrecht University (UU), founded in 1636, is an internationally renowned research university. The quality of research at the University is demonstrated by positive research evaluations and a high position in international league tables. The 2020 Shanghai Rankings of world-class universities put Utrecht University in first place in the Netherlands and 52nd worldwide. The Faculty of Geosciences has leading international positions in academic research into sustainability, solar energy and urbanisation. The extensive and internationally oriented research of the faculty makes a major contribution to the Shanghai ranking. The department Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development in the faculty aims to contribute to improved knowledge related to all Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as set by the United Nations in 2015. The research group Energy & Resources (E&R) of the Copernicus Institute will be involved in the ARV project.
