Social renovation with housing tenants

DESCRIPTION:

Social Renovation is a tenant-centred methodology aimed at improving quality of life and strengthening social resilience within social housing communities. The approach combines housing renovation processes with social support measures by addressing a broad range of social, economic, and well-being related challenges experienced by tenants.

The approach recognises that renovation processes can significantly affect residents and that technical building improvements alone are not sufficient to achieve inclusive and sustainable neighbourhood transformation. Social Renovation therefore integrates social engagement and support activities alongside physical renovation works.

BUSINESS ROUTE

VALUE

Renovation can create uncertainty and stress for tenants, particularly for vulnerable households facing social, financial, health, or administrative challenges. Many residents may also be unaware of existing support services or may experience difficulties accessing them. The methodology addresses these challenges by creating direct and trust-based engagement with tenants during the renovation process. It helps identify individual needs early and strengthens communication between residents and institutions.

APPLICATION

Social renovation is a continuous process rather than a one-off intervention. The methodology is based on close collaboration between housing providers, municipalities, and existing organisations operating in the social domain. Individual household visits are the key instrument of the process, enabling direct contact with tenants and helping connect residents to relevant institutions and available support. It requires dedicated time and resources to address issues identified during household visits. Equally important is the active involvement of tenants in decision-making and providing practical support throughout the renovation process, helping to reduce stress and ensure that renewal efforts genuinely respond to community needs.
