Solutions for recovery of eco-friendly local artisan industries

DESCRIPTION:

Use of eco-friendly local construction materials and traditional craftsmanship in sustainable renovation projects. By combining natural and low-impact materials, such as timber and local sandstone, with modern construction techniques, it aims to reduce the environmental footprint of buildings while supporting local producers and preserving traditional building knowledge. An online catalogue of sustainable construction solutions further helps designers and builders compare materials based on their environmental performance and encourages the wider adoption of locally sourced, circular building practices.

LICENSES

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification is the world’s most trusted mark for sustainable forestry. It verifies that wood, paper, and forest-based products come from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social, and economic benefits.

VALUE

The catalogue promotes lower-impact building solutions while strengthening local value chains and supporting the recovery of regional craftsmanship linked to sustainable construction practices. It also responds to the need for accessible information and practical tools that help construction professionals compare and select low-carbon and circular material solutions.

APPLICATION

The solution can be scaled by promoting the wider use of locally sourced, low-impact construction materials and by strengthening knowledge and skills across the construction sector and public administrations. The online catalogue offers a replicable and expandable tool to support more sustainable material choices in renovation and construction projects across the Balearic Islands and beyond. Training and capacity building are central to this approach. A series of courses and workshops is helping technicians and other stakeholders rediscover traditional building materials and techniques and adapt them to contemporary construction needs. Following an initial training on the use of marés sandstone in 2024, additional courses throughout 2026 focus on earth, cob and rammed earth construction, lime mortars and traditional flooring techniques, as well as structural timber and other sustainable building solutions.
