Who are We?
In June, the ARV Executive Board visited the project demo in Karviná, Czech Republic, to explore the city’s Living Lab and view the implementatio of the project results in person.
Once known for its coal mining industry, Karviná is embracing a new chapter by transforming its built environment through innovative, climate-positive solutions.
The visit focused on the ongoing refurbishment of the case study, a municipally owned healthcare centre, where partners are demonstrating how existing public buildings can be upgraded to improve energy performance, occupant comfort and long-term sustainability.
During the tour, we explored several of the technologies being implemented as part of the refurbishment. These include a high-performance ventilated façade, automated external shading on the south façade, a heat pump providing both heating and cooling, radiant ceiling systems combined with mechanical ventilation, and a green roof that has now been established for three years.
A swappable façade prototype installed on the north façade is also being monitored to assess the long-term performance and durability of different façade materials.
The discussions also highlighted the realities of delivering innovative renovation projects. While integrated photovoltaics were initially considered, they were ultimately not included due to budget constraints and the advanced stage of the building design. Similarly, the installation of PV systems on the healthcare facility required careful consideration of stricter safety regulations. The project also faces broader challenges, including delays in electricity grid upgrades, which affect the deployment of some energy solutions.
The visit also showcased the wider ambitions of Karviná’s Living Lab. Alongside testing innovative building technologies such as advanced façades, heat pumps and smart energy systems, the city actively engages local stakeholders, including young people, in shaping its transition towards a climate-neutral future. The Executive Board also learned about Karviná’s long-term vision for regenerating former industrial sites, including the planned revitalisation of the Gabriela mine.
The visit demonstrated how ARV is supporting cities in translating ambitious climate goals into practical solutions. By combining technical innovation with community engagement, Karviná offers valuable lessons for the transformation of post-industrial regions across Europe.
