Case Study #1: The Karviná Project – A Holistic Approach in Czechia

Part of the Affordable Housing Initiative Days – Prague Edition

🗓️ 11:15–12:30 | 📍 Karolinum, Charles University

As part of the Affordable Housing Initiative (AHI) Days – Prague Edition, organised by Housing Europe under the EU-funded Affordable Housing Initiative, this session will introduce the district renovation project implemented in Karviná as part of the EU-funded ARV project.

The Karviná pilot showcases how a post-industrial Czech city can pioneer a holistic approach to district renovation, integrating energy-efficient refurbishment, social inclusion, and community empowerment. Led by the Czech Technical University in Prague and the City of Karviná, the initiative demonstrates how collaboration across research, governance, and citizens can drive long-term urban transformation.

Robert Wawerka (Czech Technical University) will present the project’s integrated methodology and innovation framework, followed by a stakeholder response panel featuring representatives from the European Commission’s Housing Task Force, the Slovak Association of Construction Entrepreneurs (SZZ), Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego, GBV, and the City of Karviná. Together, they will discuss strategies to overcome financial, policy, and technical barriers to scaling up holistic renovation models across Europe.

This session embodies the AHI Days’ mission to connect innovation, policy, and practice in shaping the future of affordable housing in Europe.
