Social Renovation is a tenant-centred methodology aimed at improving quality of life and strengthening social resilience within social housing communities. The approach combines housing renovation processes with social support measures by addressing a broad range of social, economic, and well-being related challenges experienced by tenants. 

The approach recognises that renovation processes can significantly affect residents and that technical building improvements alone are not sufficient to achieve inclusive and sustainable neighbourhood transformation. Social Renovation therefore integrates social engagement and support activities alongside physical renovation works.

The solution combines solar energy generation, battery storage and electric vehicle charging into a single, intelligent building energy system. Solar panels integrated into building façades and rooftops produce clean electricity while also improving indoor comfort by reducing overheating. Energy can be stored in repurposed batteries, giving a second life to existing technologies and helping balance supply and demand. The system also supports smart charging of electric vehicles, allowing cars to store or even supply electricity back to buildings when needed. By optimising energy use in real time, this approach makes neighbourhoods more energy-efficient, flexible and resilient.

A new developed smart home lighting control system is demonstrated in SAB Housing Association Department 75 in Sønderborg, DK. The demonstration site includes 19 double terrace houses, in total 38 apartments. The smart home systems in the apartments control the lighting, electrical appliances, access controls and burglar alarms. The electrification control system can also be connected to the heating control system. 

Remotely from a smart phone app, the user can turn on and off each lighting unit and electrical appliance in the apartment and control the temperature of the heating system. The regulation can also be activated from a central panel placed on a wall in the apartment.

One of the main challenges when it comes to designing energy efficient buildings is how to guarantee air renewal without heat losses. A possible solution is to use a variable flow ventilation method. Fresh air is preheated in an intermeadiate capturing space before introducing it into the dwellings. Through automatically regulated bioclimatic elements, it is possible to ventilate in summer or capture and conserve heat in winter.

The IAQ platform is a combined Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) sensor and a user-friendly web interface. The IAQ sensor measures various quantities defining the indoor environment such as temperature, humidity, CO₂ concentration, VOC concentration, particulate matter (optional), and barometric pressure. The measured quantities are then used to inform the user, directly control technology in the building (AHU, HVAC), or provide necessary data to a superior system via Wi-Fi, LoRa WAN (optional), Modbus TCP (over Wi-Fi), RS485 with Modbus RTU.  The sensor is equipped with a RGB LED indicator or LCD display.

Different tools can be tested and selected to communicate energy-saving actions effectively and to identify when residents are most receptive to adopting energy-saving behaviours.

Different 3D and/or visualiSation techniques of Virtual Reality (VR) and/or Augmented Reality (AR) are being used during the development of the Oslo and Palma demos to better communicate results of different scenario analyses to different types of stakeholders, to facilitate citizen engagement, and to promote education and training for sustainability. The development of VR and AR applications are targeted toward several distinct stakeholders (city planners and policy makers) and citizen user group types (e.g., school children, common public, inhabitants and infrastructure users, service personnel).
