Different 3D and/or visualiSation techniques of Virtual Reality (VR) and/or Augmented Reality (AR) are being used during the development of the Oslo and Palma demos to better communicate results of different scenario analyses to different types of stakeholders, to facilitate citizen engagement, and to promote education and training for sustainability. The development of VR and AR applications are targeted toward several distinct stakeholders (city planners and policy makers) and citizen user group types (e.g., school children, common public, inhabitants and infrastructure users, service personnel).

Raising climate awareness among citizens requires a multi-faceted approach, with educational facilities playing a key role in sustainability education. At Oslo’s Voldsløkka school, Living Lab engagement activities target secondary school and cultural school pupils, their parents, and the wider neighbourhood community. The activities focus on the energy transition and circularity, including energy technologies and building materials. Engagement with pupils and the local community aims to increase awareness of sustainable behaviour, with particular emphasis on energy-efficient solutions.ns.

The study, design, and testing of a system to retrofit and thermally activate an existing tunnel (in operation or abandoned) for an energy purpose not envisaged originally. The system includes a network of pipes capable of transporting a heat transfer fluid. A prototype of such a system is being investigated by means of preliminary numerical analyses with the final aim to install it in the Piedicastello tunnels within the Trento demo. The tunnels, today abandoned and devoted to an exhibition hall, will be turned into a heat exchanger with the ground and with the internal environment for road de-icing and/or heating and cooling purposes of an adjacent building to test the potential of the identified solution in a realistic operating environment.

A coordinated approach to large-scale residential retrofitting in Palma de Mallorca, combining technical planning, citizen support, innovative financing and Next Generation EU funding. Through collaboration between the municipality, service providers, financial actors and residents, it aims to simplify and accelerate deep energy renovations of multi-family buildings. Digital tools are also used to support building selection, renovation planning and the assessment of environmental and social impacts at neighbourhood level.
