The CircBuild project builds capacity for circular construction through practical training, peer learning and demonstration activities. In cooperation with the Finnish real estate and construction industry, it implements several pilot projects testing new circular economy solutions and methods, complemented by workshops and seminars with companies. The project also strengthens sectoral knowledge through educational cooperation and disseminates its findings through two webinars and the Frush circular economy event.

A concrete example is the residential building in the Povo district of Trento, renovated using timber and bio-based on-site modular plug-and-play solutions. In September 2025, the building became the focus of a circular construction capacity-building initiative involving the University of Trento and a delegation from Tampere University participating in the CircBuild project, providing first-hand learning on circular renovation approaches and industrialised bio-based construction methods.

The project is implemented by Tampere University and Häme University of Applied Sciences, with international cooperation supported by the European Consortium of Innovative Universities. It is funded by the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment of Etelä-Savo and co-funded by the European Union, with a total budget of €469,616, including €375,692 in EU funding.

Renew-Wall is a newly designed, modular, and non-intrusive system (tenants can continue living in their homes, and installation requires no scaffolding) for the energy and architectural retrofitting of existing buildings. It mainly consists of a prefabricated insulated wood-based panel that can integrate windows, shutters, and a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery.

Build-in-Wood (BIW) was  a H2020 project running from 2019 to 2024. It was focused on the innovative development of materials and components as well as structural systems and façade elements for multi-storey wood buildings fit for both new construction and retrofitting. Developments were tested, piloted and fully documented for immediate market uptake. Active engagement of selected cities – called Early Adopters – strengthened the spread of the project results all over Europe and the urban-rural connections. The project aimed to lay the foundation for post-project full scale construction projects using developed solutions.

Some tangible outputs of the project – accessible online – are the BIW Design Guide and the BIW Community. 

Habitech-DTTN was involved in the project as a partner, whereas Trento was part of the Early Adopters network.

In terms of skills/expertise, the BIW consortium worked closely with Trentoto deliver a digital pilot and a feasibility study for a timber-based urban tower. Furthermore, 3 capacity building workshops were organized, targeting policy makers and the local wood ecosystem to reflect on barriers, opportunities and the future developments of timber constructions in the Trentino region.
